Cryptocurrency represents a digital or virtual currency that utilizes blockchain technology to ensure secure and decentralized transactions. Unlike traditional fiat currencies such as the Indian Rupee (INR), cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Ripple (XRP) are not issued or regulated by any central banks or authorities.
In India, cryptocurrency has gained traction among investors, particularly among millennials and those who are tech-savvy. Although the Indian government has not formally recognized cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum as legal tender, activities such as trading, holding, and investing in these digital assets are currently permitted under existing regulations. As of 2025, cryptocurrencies will be classified as Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs), primarily subject to tax regulations and compliance requirements.
According to the Income Tax Act, gains from cryptocurrency transactions are taxed at a flat rate of 30%. Additionally, a 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) applies to transactions exceeding certain thresholds. It is important to note that losses incurred in cryptocurrency cannot be offset against gains from other investments. As a result, investors should maintain thorough records of their trading activities and report their crypto earnings under ‘Income from Other Sources’ when filing their Income Tax Returns (ITR).
Some of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges in India include CoinDCX, WazirX, CoinSwitch Kuber, and ZebPay. These platforms necessitate mandatory KYC verification and permit users to deposit Indian Rupees (INR) through UPI or bank transfers. After verification, users can buy and sell a variety of digital currencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and Tether (USDT).
While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised concerns regarding the volatile nature of cryptocurrency markets, it has not enforced a direct prohibition. Instead, the RBI is actively investigating other options, including its own Digital Rupee (CBDC), which is currently undergoing trials for both retail and institutional applications.
