Former President Trump has launched his own cryptocurrency venture, aiming to position the United States as the premier global hub for digital currency, often referred to as the “crypto capital.” Many crypto firms assert that their platforms are safe and reliable. A wide range of industries, including Wall Street banks and online retailers, have begun to explore the use of cryptocurrencies.

Despite the increasing adoption of cryptocurrency, a recent investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, along with The New York Times and 36 partnering news organizations, revealed that at least $28 billion associated with illegal activities has entered crypto exchanges over the past two years.

This illicit funding originated from hackers, thieves, and extortionists, with connections to cybercriminal operations in North Korea and fraud schemes that span from Minnesota to Myanmar. The comprehensive analysis indicated that these groups frequently funneled money into the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, platforms where users can exchange U.S. dollars or euros for Bitcoin, Ether, and various other digital currencies.

Among the entities receiving this compromised money was Binance, the leading cryptocurrency exchange, which was involved in a $2 billion transaction with Trump’s crypto enterprise in May. Additionally, at least eight other notable exchanges, such as OKX, which is expanding its presence in the United States, were also implicated in this analysis.

“Law enforcement struggles to manage the massive volume of illegal activities in this sector,” stated Julia Hardy, co-founder of zeroShadow, a firm dedicated to crypto investigations. “This situation cannot continue indefinitely.”

Initially, the realm of digital currencies attracted criminals and drug traffickers due to the rapidity and anonymity that cryptocurrency provides, turning it into a favored tool for money laundering. Popular currencies like Bitcoin have been integral to dark-web marketplaces where illegal substances, including narcotics, are purchased. This has resulted in overdose incidents and criminal repercussions.
