Tiffany Stewart — Founder, CEO of Umoja

While numerous NFT projects exist, few genuinely leverage Web3 for profound social impact. Umoja NFTs, whose name signifies ‘unity,’ directly supports Ugandan orphans through the sale of its unique digital artwork. We had the privilege of speaking with Tiffany Stewart, the visionary behind this initiative, about its goals, purpose, and creative strategies for assisting those in need. Discover Umoja’s extraordinary fusion of art and humanitarianism.

To begin, could you explain what Umoja NFTs is all about?

Umoja, meaning “unity,” emerged at the crossroads of Web3 technology and charitable giving. Our captivating, algorithmically generated collectibles offer real-world value through direct humanitarian action, inspired by the very people we aim to assist.

In collaboration with Dasom Ministries Orphanage in Uganda, profits from Umoja NFT sales go towards supporting 17 orphans and other locals facing hardship. These individuals also provide the creative inspiration behind each digital artwork. Thus, Umoja’s journey begins with authentic real-world input and concludes with tangible real-world change.

In the crowded NFT space, what makes Umoja stand out from other digital art projects?

Umoja prioritizes making a tangible impact on the lives of real people. Instead of simply donating to a large charitable organization, we opted to purchase the land on which Dasom Ministries Orphanage is located. This secures their future and prevents displacement. Our initial efforts are entirely focused on improving the lives of these specific individuals. Furthermore, these orphans and volunteers aren’t just crucial to our mission; they are the heart of the artwork itself.

Could you elaborate on how your project integrates the involvement of volunteers and children in the artistic creation process?

We engage directly with the children and volunteers, the latter of whom assist with translation for younger children still learning English, to gather their imaginative ideas. We firmly believe in the boundless power of human imagination and utilize modern generative AI tools to translate their visions into reality, giving them a platform to express themselves and receive much-needed support. Every artistic prompt begins with the phrase “I imagine…,” which our team then uses to create pieces in our distinct style, designed to represent the abstract nature of imagination.

In essence, the community at Dasom Ministries Orphanage conceives the concepts, we materialize them as NFTs, and the resulting proceeds are channeled directly into pre-determined, recurring projects outlined on our website.

How does Umoja ensure transparency and accountability in its charitable contributions?

We maintain operational integrity through consistent updates from Dasom Ministries, including progress photos and videos of project implementation, receipts documenting purchases, and regular conversations with the orphanage director.

What led you to choose supporting an orphanage in Uganda over other philanthropic opportunities?

I have long desired to assist individuals in that region of the world and believe that positive change starts with young people. On a personal level, I lack family support myself and understand the feeling of not having a support network or anyone believing in your potential. I see that potential in each of these children and am committed to doing all I can to nurture it.

Besides purchasing an NFT, are there other ways to support your cause?

Absolutely! Direct donations to Dasom Ministries can be made through their website: https://dasomministriesuganda.org/

Have any members of the Umoja team been involved in other blockchain-based projects?

For the past five years, I (Tiffany) have served as Head of Design for the Stellar Development Foundation (stellar.org), an organization focused on leveraging blockchain for real-world utility. My primary focus at Stellar has been developing Vibrant App, a non-custodial wallet enabling individuals in countries experiencing high inflation to access USDC and protect their savings from devaluation.

What are the future plans for Umoja? Are there aspirations to expand the project’s reach across Africa?

Umoja has ambitious aspirations. Our capacity to achieve them depends heavily on the level of support the project receives. Ideally, we aim to not only meet the basic needs of the individuals we support but also set them on a path to success by establishing schools, promoting vocational training, and strengthening the broader community. Our long-term vision is to replicate the Umoja model across Africa and, eventually, beyond to assist many more individuals and communities in need.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Umoja strives to create sustainable support for those we assist by reinvesting our royalties back into the project. We encourage continuous support, whether through buying or selling, as contributions in the secondary market are equally valuable. Every Umoja NFT transaction directly supports our mission, providing food, medicine, and shelter. It’s never too late to join Umoja; the only choice is whether or not to participate.

It’s also important to note that at mint, each image will be priced at approximately $100. We believe this price point provides a meaningful contribution while remaining accessible to individuals who wish to support a worthy cause and receive a unique piece of art in return. Our mint date is November 28th, coinciding with Giving Tuesday.
