007 First Light
, the highly anticipated James Bond game developed by IO Interactive, known for their work on Hitman, is set to make a grand entrance, marking the return of the iconic secret agent to the gaming world after a considerable absence. Interestingly, despite MGM’s reputation for carefully guarding the Bond legacy, they had only one specific request during the game’s development.
According to Jonathan Lacaille, Franchise Director at IO Interactive, in a recent interview with
VGC
, MGM’s primary concern was to ensure that Bond was not portrayed merely as a “killing machine.” Beyond this, the studio has been exceptionally receptive to IO Interactive’s innovative vision for the character.
Lacaille emphasized the collaborative atmosphere, stating, “They’ve considered every idea we’ve had.” He added, “There weren’t many massive nos or anything like that. It was always more like, ‘Yeah, but, we could do it this way, or…’ So it’s always been very collaborative, and a lot of good feedback, because they’ve been working with the franchise for so long as well, so it was great to have them so involved in the project, right? I’m sure it was a fun ride for them as well.'” This highlights the synergy between the development team and the franchise custodians.
Previously, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak has hinted that “007 First Light” might embrace a live-service model akin to the Hitman series, potentially by
introducing fresh Bond missions
during the post-launch phase.
A glimpse into what this could entail was recently showcased in Hitman: World of Assassination when
Mads Mikkelsen reprised his role as the villainous Le Chiffre
from the James Bond movie, “Casino Royale”. In this Elusive Target mission, Agent 47 was given the freedom to choose how he eliminated Le Chiffre while securing his own escape.
“007 First Light” will be a completely original story, not tied to any prior Bond interpretation, focusing on
Bond’s formative years
. IO Interactive plans to release “007 First Light” on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, and PC sometime in 2026.
