Prepare for a bizarre blend of dark humor, fantasy, and, yes, gambling, all wrapped up in a challenging roguelike experience! This unexpected combination is coming in a new indie title slated for 2025, and honestly, it looks intriguing. The debut trailer showcases “The Pläins öf Päin” (a name of our own enthusiastic making), a bleak and unsettling landscape inhabited by a hapless egg-shaped character referred to as ‘eggo’. Let’s hope this poor egg-guy fares well in such a strange world. May there be some justice.
Slots & Daggers is the creation of Friedemann, known previously for Summerhouse, the charming and well-received town-building game. “Following my last project, my goal was to do something dramatically different,” Friedemann explained. “I wanted something faster-paced, incorporating numbers, combat, and goblins!” Think highly energized, calculating goblins, perhaps? Here’s a sneak peek at some features listed on Steam:
- Unique slot machine gameplay
- An offbeat fantasy setting
- Roughly drawn, peculiar characters
- Classic retro-inspired visuals
- Punchy, old-school hip hop beats
- Engaging arcade action with satisfying “pling” sound effects
- The core elements: Numbers! Battles! Goblins!
“To craft this game, I’ve merged elements that I truly enjoy – eccentric fantasy worlds, hand-drawn quirky characters, vintage hip-hop drum sounds, and addictive arcade-style gameplay that generates gratifying coin sounds – with tried-and-true roguelike mechanics,” Friedemann said. The developer also wants players to know that because it is a solo project, it is a smaller game that won’t have “80+ hours of content like games developed by bigger teams.”
While the quirky characters and catchy tunes are undeniably appealing, it’s somewhat disheartening that developers feel obligated to preemptively address potential complaints about shorter game lengths. This isn’t a critique of the developer; rather, it reflects the often-unrealistic expectations some gamers can have. One can only imagine the inevitable negative review appearing right around the 79-hour mark.
