In brief

  • Guido Reichstadter, an advocate for responsible AI, has concluded his month-long hunger strike, which took place outside Anthropic’s headquarters as a statement against the potential risks of unrestrained AI progress.
  • His demonstration brought international attention to the concerns of “AI doomers,” who caution that leading AI labs are rapidly advancing towards potentially dangerous levels of artificial superintelligence.
  • Despite ending his physical protest, Reichstadter affirms his commitment to continue campaigning for greater transparency and accountability in the regulation of artificial intelligence.

On Wednesday, Guido Reichstadter, a vocal proponent raising awareness of potential AI risks, ended his 30-day hunger strike, a global initiative aimed at highlighting concerns surrounding advanced artificial intelligence development.

“I am recovering well and building back my strength to continue this vital campaign,” he posted online.

Reichstadter’s protest began in early September outside the San Francisco headquarters of Anthropic, an AI research company established by former OpenAI personnel. From the outset, he declared his intention to consume only water, electrolytes, and vitamins, forgoing all caloric intake as a means of challenging one of the leading organizations in the field of AI development.

Anthropic, the creators of Claude, is considered one of the most consciously safety-oriented organizations within the AI sector.

Simultaneously, similar hunger strikes emerged worldwide. In London, Michael Trazzi, a former AI researcher, initiated a parallel fast outside Google’s DeepMind offices, with others either joining or attempting to replicate the action. However, Trazzi and another participant, Denys Sheremet, concluded their strikes earlier due to health considerations. This left Reichstadter as the most prominent voice in the ongoing protest.

His actions garnered attention from journalists, and passersby, including delivery personnel, security staff, and company employees, became unintentional observers. The messages displayed on his signs and social media posts consistently conveyed the concern that AI development is proceeding with undue haste, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes.

His core demands were straightforward: Anthropic should acknowledge the potential dangers, suspend further AI development at the frontier, and commit to public transparency. To date, neither Anthropic nor Google has issued any statements regarding the hunger strikes.

Why end now?

Hunger strikes represent a drastic form of protest, carrying inherent risks of lasting health implications. Their effectiveness hinges upon the demonstrator’s vulnerability. This effectiveness can diminish if the participant requires hospitalization, becomes incapacitated, or if the demonstration is consistently overlooked. Therefore, the protest must effectively communicate its central message before it risks becoming merely a medical spectacle.

Social media response was largely supportive of his protest.
