Meta is reducing its workforce by approximately 600 individuals within its artificial intelligence (AI) divisions.

According to a statement given to CNBC by a company representative, this decision forms part of a larger strategy aimed at streamlining management structures and improving operational efficiency.

The announcement was communicated via a memo from Meta’s newly appointed chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, who assumed the role in June. His appointment followed Meta’s substantial $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI.

The personnel reductions will impact those working in AI infrastructure, the core AI research group, and other teams contributing to AI-related products and services.

Affected employees were notified on October 22 that their employment would continue, without work duties, until November 21. According to a communication reviewed by CNBC, access to Meta’s internal systems will be revoked during this period, with the time allocated for seeking alternative roles within the organization.

Departing employees will receive a severance package consisting of 16 weeks of base salary, plus an additional two weeks for each completed year of service at Meta. This total compensation, however, will be offset by the duration of the notice period.

While these roles are being eliminated, Meta states that it intends to continue recruiting for vital positions that support its long-term AI objectives.
