Justin Drake advises cryptocurrency investors to ready themselves for a strategic shift to addresses featuring concealed public keys.

He cautions that an AI-enabled cryptographic breakthrough might surface in a few months if circumstances worsen.

His message does not indicate that Bitcoin’s security has been compromised, and he clearly warns against hasty transactions.
Justin Drake has called upon Bitcoin and cryptocurrency holders to prepare for potentially moving their assets, stressing that advancements in artificial intelligence could pose risks to the cryptographic safeguards securing their investments sooner than anticipated.
In a post from October 7 on X, the Ethereum researcher advocated for a planned transition to wallet addresses keeping their public keys private.
Drake Advocates ‘Bunker Mode’ for Crypto Holders
Drake’s suggestion emphasizes the need for preparedness against a potential failure of cryptographic measures, potentially necessitating immediate actions for asset security.
“I urge the blockchain community to begin planning for a transition into ‘bunker mode’ without panic,” he stated.
He suggested that major stakeholders consider transferring the majority of their assets to previously unused addresses that do not expose their public keys.
If a holder engages in a transaction, Drake recommended subsequently shifting any leftover funds to an entirely new address.
Public keys serve to validate signatures, while private keys handle the authorization of transactions.
Drake fears that future mathematical advancements could enable the extraction of a private key from an exposed public key.
“In my view, it is plausible to expect that ECDSA could be compromised before the critical day arrives, potentially within months rather than years,” he remarked.
Drake outlined a potential strategy that could be executed in approximately one week with available hardware, such as a significant GPU array.
AI’s Role in Reassessing Threat Levels
Previously, concerns mainly revolved around quantum computing achieving the necessary power to dismantle Bitcoin’s public-key security.
Drake’s perspective highlights the possibility of AI discovering a mathematical shortcut on standard computers prior to that quantum breakthrough.
His caution came on the heels of OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical findings generated by an internal frontier model, revealing formal verifications of multiple proofs that are verifiable by computers.
Drake argued that the speed of mathematical advancements should lead the industry to reevaluate its beliefs surrounding the security of elliptic curves.
Past Warnings on Bitcoin’s Price by Charles Edwards
Drake’s alert comes amidst ongoing discussions that have already generated remarkable predictions regarding Bitcoin’s valuation.
As CCN previously reported, Capriole founder Charles Edwards cautioned in December 2025 that if a quantum security solution was not implemented by 2028, Bitcoin could risk trading below $50,000.
“If no fix is in place by 2028, I foresee Bitcoin falling below $50,000 and continuously declining until it is addressed,” he commented.
He added, “We must resolve this issue next year, or brace for what could be the most severe Bitcoin bear market ever. The FTX incident will seem trivial in comparison,” he stated.
He emphasized that a substantial bear market might be required to motivate hesitant Bitcoin backers to support necessary upgrades, advocating for proactive measures before the risk becomes tangible.
Without enhancements, he predicted that quantum advances could potentially compromise Bitcoin within 2 to 8 years.
This security discussion also has ramifications for Bitcoin’s governance structure.
In prior CCN coverage, venture capitalist Nic Carter pointed out that institutional players like BlackRock might seek increased sway over Bitcoin’s progression if developers proceed too slowly in addressing quantum threats.
“They’ll eliminate current developers and bring in new ones,” he noted during the Bits + Bips podcast.
Polymath CEO Warns of Unexpected Breakthroughs
Polymath CEO Martin Halford has previously cautioned that waiting for a specific technological milestone could leave financial companies vulnerable.
During an interview with CCN at the Blockchain Futurist Conference in Toronto, Halford acknowledged that he could not pinpoint when a significant quantum advancement would occur, but suggested it might be imminent.
“I wish I could definitively state that quantum threats are two years or five years away. We just can’t predict,” he commented.
He added, “We acknowledge that the quantum era is approaching, but the exact timing is uncertain.”
Halford underscored the danger of “harvest now, decrypt later,” in which attackers gather encrypted data today and hope future technology will allow access.
“We must safeguard data today, as it can have a long lifespan,” he stated.
The CEO emphasized that since the breakthrough cannot be scheduled, it might happen without any forewarning and occur rapidly.
“Eventually, there may be an announcement regarding advancements like achieving 1,000 qubits, and that could pose a serious problem for us,” he said.
“It’s essential that we prepare for that eventuality, and we must do so swiftly.”
Michael Saylor Posits Bitcoin Will Upgrade Ahead of Threats
Other notable advocates for Bitcoin have presented a more optimistic evaluation.
As CCN reported in March, Strategy CEO Michael Saylor contended that a quantum computer capable of compromising modern encryption will not emerge within this decade.
He maintained that Bitcoin would upgrade in advance of any potential threats.
“Quantum computing won’t nullify Bitcoin; it will enhance its security,” he asserted.
“As the network updates, active coins will transition, while lost coins will remain untouched. This boosts security. The supply diminishes and Bitcoin becomes even stronger.”
Nonetheless, even with a viable technical solution, significant collaboration among exchanges, users, and other stakeholders will be essential.
The differences in perspectives revolve around how much time remains for the cryptocurrency community to prepare and whether they can implement upgrades before any threats materialize.
