Google is refuting allegations suggesting its innovative AI-powered search functionalities are negatively impacting the flow of visitors to websites. This rebuttal was presented in a statement posted on their official blog on August 6th.
The tech giant asserts that the total count of user clicks directed from its search platform to various external sites has held steady in comparison to the previous year. They also indicated a slight improvement in the quality of these click-throughs.
Liz Reid, who heads up Google’s Search division, stated that recent reports indicating declining website traffic are based on incomplete data. She clarified that several of these claims rely on limited data sets, isolated cases, or updates implemented before the comprehensive rollout of Google’s AI-driven tools.

Reid also observed that shifting user behaviors are influencing online engagement, resulting in some websites gaining increased visibility while others experience a decrease. Google did not provide specific figures related to these trends.
She pointed out a heightened user preference for content that provides authentic perspectives, particularly forums, videos, podcasts, and personal blog posts.
Reid further argued the importance of assessing the level of user involvement generated from clicks. She suggested that individuals arriving at a website through an AI-generated search result demonstrate deeper engagement.
Google emphasized the role of its AI Overviews, which integrate several web links within search results. Reid explained that this functionality leads to enhanced visibility and greater potential for website traffic.
