The United States Army is increasingly focused on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational readiness and effectively tackle evolving battlefield challenges, particularly the growing threat posed by unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
In a recent initiative, the Army introduced AI-enhanced smart glasses, similar to Ray-Bans, for soldiers engaged in vehicle maintenance and repair tasks.
These innovative glasses are capable of recording video during complex repair procedures. The integrated AI then assists less-experienced personnel by providing step-by-step guidance based on the captured footage and stored knowledge.

According to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, a key objective of this initiative is to expedite the integration of commercially available technology into military applications. While the initial development of similar glasses by companies like Meta involved substantial investment, the Army’s testing units are procuring these AI-powered glasses at a considerably lower cost, approximately $400 per unit.
The Army views the integration of AI as a critical component of force protection against the increasing prevalence of drones. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George has identified counter-drone capabilities as a top priority. He emphasizes that these systems must be cost-effective, possess rapid response capabilities, and utilize automation to maximize their efficacy.
Driscoll pointed out that effectively countering drone swarms necessitates automated systems. The sheer volume and speed of these attacks make a solely human response inadequate. Automated countermeasures can provide faster reaction times and reduced error rates compared to manual engagement.
General George further clarified that the Army’s strategy is to maintain affordability in its drone defense solutions. The ideal scenario is that the cost of neutralizing a drone threat, estimated at $5,000, should be significantly less than the cost of the drone itself.
