Summary
- Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, has urged the crypto community to start preparing for “bunker mode” by gradually transferring assets to secure addresses that have never been exposed.
- He warned that ECDSA, the signature scheme used by Bitcoin and Ethereum, may be vulnerable before Q-Day, possibly within months, due to rapid advancements in AI-driven mathematics.
- Drake advised against panic and emphasized the importance of hastening Ethereum’s transition to hash-based cryptography.
For years, Justin Drake has cautioned that the rise of quantum computing poses a significant threat to crypto security. Recently, he expressed concern that advancements in artificial intelligence could lead to vulnerabilities even sooner.
On Wednesday, he called upon the blockchain sector to begin planning for a strategy he described as “bunker mode.” This involves a systematic and careful relocation of funds to new addresses that do not display their public keys, thus keeping them concealed behind a hash.
The primary concern involves ECDSA, the digital signature scheme that secures transactions by linking them to their rightful private key. When a wallet conducts a transaction, its public key becomes exposed on the blockchain. If ECDSA were compromised, malicious entities could derive the private key from the public key and access the wallet funds.
Drake indicated that preparing for a potential ECDSA breach might be prudent even before Q-Day, the anticipated point at which quantum machines can break existing encryption, “in the worst-case scenario, in months rather than years.” He referenced a situation where recovering a private key could take about a week leveraging state-of-the-art hardware, like large GPU clusters.
Today I call upon the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning for “bunker mode”. My personal recommendation is to set in motion a controlled mass migration of assets to fresh addresses, i.e. addresses whose pubkeys remain hidden behind a hash.

He highlighted a significant surge in AI-driven mathematical discoveries, including 722 results published by OpenAI on Tuesday, as evidence that previously accepted beliefs are shifting. Drake expressed that elliptic curves seem especially open to attacks from advanced AI. He suggested that their complex mathematical frameworks might allow for innovative attack vectors that hash functions are designed to withstand.
Drake emphasized the importance of a measured and calm approach, advising that transitions of assets do not necessitate new forms of cryptography or wallets. He called on cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether to enhance their cold storage security. Additionally, he mentioned that wallets containing less than 50 BTC are somewhat protected by what he refers to as “Satoshi’s shield,” which includes around 20,000 identified addresses linked to Bitcoin’s inventor, each holding 50 BTC, likely making them the initial target of any attack.
This alert signifies a notable increase in concerns regarding the vulnerability of cryptocurrencies’ security measures. Back in March, following a Google study indicating quantum computers might breach crypto’s security sooner than anticipated, Drake estimated the chances of Q-Day occurring by 2032 at 10% or higher.
Earlier this year, the Ethereum Foundation established a dedicated team focused on post-quantum strategies. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined methods to transition the network to quantum-resistant cryptographic techniques.
Drake asserted that the roadmap for Ethereum’s implementation of hash-based cryptography should be expedited. “I will advocate for maximum defensive acceleration,” he commented.
