Anthropic, a firm specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), is raising concerns about the misuse of its Claude chatbot. Despite safety measures intended to block harmful actions, malicious individuals are exploiting Claude to facilitate cybercrime.
According to Anthropic, criminals are leveraging Claude not just for technical insights, but also to emotionally manipulate individuals – a tactic the company has termed “vibe hacking.”
In a report released on August 28th, Threat Intelligence, Anthropic’s security team, including researchers Ken Lebedev, Alex Moix, and Jacob Klein, described “vibe hacking” as the utilization of AI tools to sway emotions, foster trust, and control decision-making.

For instance, one reported case involved a hacker who allegedly used Claude to compromise sensitive data from 17 targets, encompassing hospitals, public service organizations, governmental bodies, and religious institutions. Following the data breach, the perpetrator demanded ransoms in Bitcoin
Claude’s capabilities were exploited to scrutinize stolen financial records, propose appropriate ransom amounts tailored to each victim, and draft personalized messages intended to induce anxiety and a sense of urgency.
Although the perpetrator’s access to Claude was subsequently terminated, Anthropic highlighted that this incident reveals the increasing ease with which individuals possessing limited technical skills can create effective malicious software and evade detection.
The report also detailed a separate case involving North Korean IT specialists. Anthropic asserted that these individuals employed Claude to fabricate identities and successfully navigate job interviews for roles within prominent US technology companies, including some within the Fortune 500.
