The technology giant Meta is now prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) over virtual reality, allocating significant financial resources to fuel this strategic shift.

During the second three months of 2025, the company invested $17 billion in upgrading its technological foundations. Susan Li, the Chief Financial Officer, projects this total could climb to $72 billion by year’s end, with further increases anticipated in 2026.

A substantial portion of these funds is earmarked for developing two massive computing infrastructures, known as Prometheus and Hyperion.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, discussed the company’s AI initiatives during a recent investor conference call. He expressed optimism about the positive societal and economic impacts of highly advanced AI while also emphasizing its capability to enrich people’s lives.

Zuckerberg also detailed his vision in a July 30 blog post, outlining the development of a personalized AI assistant capable of understanding user needs and helping them achieve their objectives.

He stated that Meta aims to broadly distribute the advantages of this emerging technology. However, he also acknowledged the importance of carefully addressing potential risks and determining the appropriate balance between public accessibility and responsible information control.

Recently, Zuckerberg announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new research division, headed by Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman. Interested in the details? Learn more about this development.
