Apple’s Robot Revolution

Apple is reportedly delving into the world of robotics again, signaling a possible shift away from its previously strong focus on Apple Intelligence.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Apple is internally testing various hardware concepts powered by artificial intelligence. These include intelligent displays for homes, security gadgets, and a robot designed for tabletop use that could use facial recognition and motorized movements to engage with people. It’s important to note that none of these projects are officially greenlit for development, and sources caution that they may never actually be released to consumers.

One particular prototype, known internally as J595 and tentatively scheduled for release in 2027, boasts a display that rotates on a robotic arm. This concept has been nicknamed the “Pixar Lamp” due to its resemblance to the famous animation studio’s expressive mascot.

The robot is imagined as a more personalized smart assistant, with the capability to follow users during video conferences or respond to conversations with physical movements. Apple is also investigating the potential of mobile robots with wheels, as well as humanoid robots intended for use in industrial settings.

“Apple has historically excelled at seamlessly integrating hardware and software, along with creating intuitive user interfaces,” stated Gary Marcus, an AI expert and professor emeritus of psychology and neural science at New York University, in an interview with Decrypt. “While I believe that dependable humanoid robots for home use are still a long way off, if I were ever to purchase one, I would hope it would come from Apple, given their attention to privacy, reliability, elegance, security, and thoughtful design.”

The prospect of Apple launching a range of robots initially surfaced last year, coinciding with a series of AI-focused announcements and advancements from the tech giant. In February, prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple is exploring both humanoid and non-humanoid robots as part of its future smart home ecosystem, emphasizing that these products are currently in the early stages of proof-of-concept development.

During a recent company-wide meeting, CEO Tim Cook reportedly told employees that Apple needs to “dominate in AI,” describing the company’s upcoming product lineup as “remarkable” and hinting that some devices will be unveiled soon, while others are still further down the line. However, he did not specifically mention robotics.

The ultimate goal is to create an artificial intelligence experience that feels tangibly present. While the robot is still in the initial phases of development, it represents a key component of Apple’s broader strategy to re-establish itself as a leader in the AI arena.

A home display designed for smart home automation, video calls, and a more capable enhanced Siri that can hold natural conversations with users is reportedly further along in development and may be released in 2026. Both the display and the robot are expected to utilize a new software platform, internally called “Charismatic,” which is designed to handle voice commands, facial recognition, and personalized content.

Apple has not yet responded to Decrypt’s request for comments.
