Get ready for a deeper dive into Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions, the intriguing project from System Era that’s being described as more than just a sequel to Astroneer. Yesterday, the developers shared an extensive gameplay preview, outlining the core activities players will engage in. The game is designed around online cooperative play, fitting into a genre often humorously critiqued on social platforms. Players can choose to embark on the journey solo or with a team of up to three friends. Unique gameplay mechanics also incorporate interactions with other player groups in the game world.

Embracing familiar elements from similar games in its category, the initial phase involves preparation. Players will use the S.S. Starseeker, a central hub populated with uniquely designed Astroneer characters. Aboard this ship, resources are gathered, tools are crafted, and crucial decisions are made about what to bring along on each expedition. This can range from essential equipment to frivolous items chosen for amusement.

The expeditions themselves follow a standard structure. Players land on a planet, tackle specific objectives or missions, and return safely before their oxygen supply depletes. Throughout these missions, players may encounter alien creatures and discover valuable loot.

A central feature is the versatile terrain tool, adaptable with various modifications. The basic function removes terrain, but different attachments allow players to manipulate the environment – shooting water, building up land, or even launching creatures and themselves into the air.

Unlike procedurally generated environments, the planets in Starseeker are meticulously crafted. The initial planet, Tefra, is handcrafted. This design allows players to revisit specific locations and facilitates increasingly challenging missions.

The challenges vary from simple tasks like equipment repair to more complex activities like relocating communication receivers to elevated positions. Some challenges are designed to encourage collaboration between different player groups, promoting a cooperative experience.

While a definitive release date is pending, Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions is slated for release in 2026.
