Experts are noting that projections around artificial intelligence have consistently fallen short of reality. The common standards used to measure AI performance no longer hold their original value, according to
OpenAI
Chair and Sierra CEO Bret Taylor.
Taylor, a former Google engineer known for his pivotal work redesigning
Google Maps
, shared a straightforward perspective on the rapid advancements in AI technology during an interview with
The Verge
.
Sierra, a customer service platform using AI, recently
secured substantial funding
, putting the company valuation at $10 billion. Sierra is now enabling users to conduct complex financial operations without needing direct interaction from humans. On September 11, Taylor stated during an interview that an AI agent fueled by their platform could refinance a home from the beginning to the end.

Basic AI Not a Differentiator: Taylor on Readily Available AI Tools
According to The Verge, Taylor suggested that basic, enhanced AI tools powered by LLMs no longer provide a competitive advantage in the industry.
He noted that it has become common for engineers to be able to integrate ChatGPT with a knowledge base in a very short amount of time, stating “Combining ChatGPT with a database is now a relatively simple task for many software developers. Most modern engineers could accomplish this task over a weekend, which is truly remarkable. This concept was science fiction just a few years ago, but it has now become a weekend project.”
Taylor highlighted the fact that the real challenges involve establishing boundaries for highly regulated sectors, effectively managing dialogues in multiple languages, and developing reliable methods for handling audio interruptions or secure data like account numbers. He told The Verge that Sierra’s priority is addressing these difficult issues in applied AI rather than implementing standard chatbots.

Enterprise AI Overhyped: Many Initiatives Predicted to Fail
Taylor cautioned that many AI initiatives within businesses may be more for show rather than truly transformative, based on the interview. He gave a harsh assessment of how corporations are adopting AI.
According to Taylor, many people are “doing performative AI projects, but to actually go to that last mile is quite difficult.”
Taylor informed The Verge that the problem is often that companies are choosing to try to build AI systems on their own rather than utilizing platforms designed with specific industries in mind.
He suggests that applied AI companies are better equipped to deliver concrete results, stating “I believe the solution lies with applied AI companies. If you want to enhance customer experience, go with Sierra. If you need a legal AI agent, choose Harvey.”

Google Maps Creator Believes AI Will Surpass His Earlier Work
Taylor’s career demonstrates just how quickly AI has exceeded human capabilities. The former Google engineer is most famous for redeveloping Google Maps over a single weekend, a feat which he now feels could easily be managed by AI systems.
Taylor admitted to The Verge that while he rewrote Google Maps in a weekend, he feels that his achievement would be routine for an AI system, stating that if you’ve used Codex or Cloud Code, you’re probably thinking an AI agent could handle this.
That recognition forced Taylor to understand just how AI has made his major success obsolete. “The excitement around the personal identity portion of the project can be achieved through AI. I personally wrote some pretty solid code, but in a couple of years, this can all be done through AI. The response over the next couple of years will be ‘wow, people did that?”
