The Kingdom of Bhutan has implemented the Ethereum blockchain as the backbone of its national digital ID platform.
This initiative is designed to empower the nation’s approximately 800,000 residents with a secure method for verifying their identities and accessing a wide array of governmental services.
The formal unveiling occurred at a special event graced by the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk, Ethereum’s co-creator Vitalik Buterin, and Aya Miyaguchi, who serves as the President of the Ethereum Foundation.

While initial integration with Ethereum has been achieved, the complete transfer of all citizen identification data is projected to be finalized by the beginning of 2026.
Miyaguchi commented on X, emphasizing that this marks a pioneering application of Ethereum for a national identity initiative.
Bhutan’s national identification system has seen multiple iterations. It initially utilized Hyperledger Indy before transitioning to Polygon in August of 2024. This most recent migration to Ethereum is intended to capitalize on its robust community support, extensive array of developer tools, and enhanced long-term security features.
The shift to Ethereum was spearheaded by internal Bhutanese teams focusing on digital identity solutions and governmental technology advancements. Support was also provided by contributors from the local cryptocurrency community.
