Bitcoin has fallen to its lowest point in six weeks, now trading at $77,646. Meanwhile, ether has seen a drop, reaching its lowest price in two months, as noted by Reuters.

Ether is now priced at $2,238.76, and BNB, the cryptocurrency initially introduced as Binance Coin, has decreased by over 8% in the last 24 hours, falling to $694, according to data from CoinGecko.

This market decline followed an announcement from Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, informing users that it was investigating a potential security breach involving large amounts of digital assets.

As part of their security response, Binance stated that around $2.54 billion in cryptocurrency assets had been frozen.

The exchange is collaborating with law enforcement, cryptocurrency issuers, and blockchain intelligence firms to track down affected funds and mitigate further losses.

Among those involved in freezing assets related to the security concern are stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle.

Tether has frozen nearly $1.57 billion, while Circle has blocked over $800 million in related assets.

Yi He, co-founder of Binance, assured that the company would compensate for losses resulting from any confirmed hacking incidents.

The exchange has also temporarily halted trading on its Binance Alpha platform and paused withdrawals to conduct additional security checks.

Binance confirmed that customer funds remain secure, and withdrawals will recommence once the security evaluation is finalized.

According to its website, Binance maintains a Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU), an emergency reserve entirely held in bitcoin, which is meant to safeguard customer assets in the event of security breaches.

This recent incident has raised fresh concerns regarding cybersecurity risks in the cryptocurrency sector, as exchanges and digital asset platforms face ongoing threats from hacking attempts and unauthorized transfers.

The complete scale and cause of the suspected security breach remain unconfirmed.
