In a recent fluctuation, Bitcoin experienced a rapid downturn, plummeting from $86,615 to $85,503 in less than 20 minutes. By 1:05 p.m. EST, the digital currency further declined, hovering just above $85,200. This shift left its market cap nearly stable from the previous day, standing at $1.71 trillion.

This turbulent price movement resulted in the liquidation of more than $109 million in leveraged Bitcoin positions. Data from Coinglass indicates that short positions accounted for the majority of these liquidations, totaling $62 million, while long positions were liquidated for $47 million. In the larger cryptocurrency market, short liquidations summed up to $122 million and long liquidations approached $116 million.

CFTC Moves Forward with Crypto Regulation

Despite the current fluctuating price trends, experts remain hopeful, predicting that the general “Uptober” trend may reignite buying momentum and lead to a positive finish for 2026. Additionally, U.S. regulatory bodies are beginning to establish clearer guidelines following Congress’s inability to pass the CLARITY Act, seen as a long-term benefit for digital asset acceptance.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has joined this initiative, announcing on October 5 that it is inviting public comments on an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking concerning cryptocurrency transactions. CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig emphasized that this is a vital step in their ongoing efforts to maintain America’s status as the leading hub for crypto.

The CFTC has requested that public input, which will aid in informing future agency actions or regulations, be submitted within 60 days after the notice is released.
