The incident occurred against the backdrop of a significant $6 billion hack on Binance, which the FBI has linked to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group.
- Bitcoin maintained a relatively stable price near $78,000 over the weekend, after a week filled with volatility.
- Polymarket announced it has fully refunded 689 out of the 726 wallets impacted by last week’s security breach, with the remaining 37 being reimbursed as their claims undergo verification.
- The prediction market platform is also distributing $1.19 million to approximately 5,500 wallets to reimburse traders affected during its trading halt.
Bitcoin (BTC) demonstrated stability at around $78,000 over the weekend, showcasing resilience after a turbulent week characterized by two major security breaches in the crypto space. Polymarket is actively working to reimburse traders who suffered losses due to its hack and the subsequent trading suspension.
The company reported that “689 of the 726 affected wallets have been fully refunded,” with the remaining 37 “being processed as claims are validated.” Furthermore, Polymarket is addressing the financial losses incurred during the outage.
“We’re going above and beyond,” the company stated, adding that traders who experienced financial setbacks due to the trading pause, or those whose positions were “liquidated,” will also receive compensation. Polymarket indicated it would disburse “$1.19 million to 5,500 wallets,” initiating this process with their recent announcement.
What Went Wrong?
The breach affected Polymarket.com, the international platform of the company, on Saturday. Polymarket revealed that one of its third-party service providers had been compromised, prompting the company to alert law enforcement.
“All individuals affected will be made whole,” the company assured on that day. Following the breach, trading was halted, and Polymarket pledged, “Once we are back online, we will ensure all impacted traders are fully reimbursed.”
A Challenging Week for Crypto Security
The breach coincided with a much larger security failure at Binance, where hackers made off with over $6 billion. On Saturday, the FBI confirmed that North Korea was behind the attack, calling the operation “TraderTraitor.” These two events sent shockwaves through the crypto markets.
More than $1.6 billion in leveraged trades were liquidated, causing Bitcoin (BTC) to dip to a six-week low just above $77,300 on Thursday. Binance has since begun resuming withdrawals this weekend, starting with Bitcoin. The company claims to have restored approximately 90% of the stolen cryptocurrency.
Market conditions have since stabilized. On Sunday, Bitcoin’s price hovered around $77,900, reaching an intraday peak of $78,133, while the Crypto Fear & Greed Index shifted back to “Neutral.” On Stocktwits, public sentiment regarding BTC changed from ‘bearish’ to ‘extremely bearish,’ with discussions surrounding it transitioning from ‘high’ to ‘normal’ in the last 24 hours.
