Bitcoin Dips Below $77,000 Amid Market Dynamics
Bitcoin (BTC) slid below the $77,000 mark following Monday’s opening on Wall Street, as optimism over a potential peace agreement between the US and Iran dwindled.
Key Highlights:
- Bitcoin’s value dropped beneath $78,000 as WTI crude oil fell to $95.15 per barrel, marking its lowest point since October 15.
- Gold prices increased by 2% throughout the day, bouncing back from a 13-month low of $3,891 per troy ounce triggered by a sell-off in US stocks linked to tech earnings.
- According to Rekt Capital, BTC’s inability to surpass $78,500 raises the possibility of dropping below $76,000 soon.
BTC Takes a Hit as Earnings Reports and Midterm Elections Take Center Stage
Data from TradingView indicated that Bitcoin (BTCUSD) extended its daily decline by 1.7%, following a peak of $78,750 after Sunday’s market close.
Comments from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about Iran caused oil prices to plummet, as traders adjusted expectations for a diplomatic resolution. Previously, former President Donald Trump hinted that military action might be considered around the time of the US midterm elections on Tuesday.
During a press conference, Rubio remarked that Trump seeks to resolve the issue “diplomatically,” emphasizing a preference for peaceful solutions while still maintaining military readiness.
At the time of this report, US WTI crude was reported down more than 7% at approximately $96.50 per barrel, reaching a low of $95.15, its lowest since mid-October. Brent crude experienced a drop of 9% at around $103.30.
US Stock Market Response
US stock markets opened positively as traders reacted to the news, but the gains for both the S&P 500 and the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite Index were muted in anticipation of third-quarter earnings reports from major companies like Apple and Palantir. Last week’s earnings results sparked volatility across risk assets and precious metals as concerns about AI investments resurfaced. As of now, the Nasdaq Composite Index showed an increase of about 0.2%.
Gold’s Resilience Amid Market Shifts
Gold, on the other hand, maintained its 2% daily gains, surpassing the $3,950 mark after previously hitting 13-month lows of $3,891 on Friday. Economist Robin Brooks has predicted further rises for gold as oil prices continue to decline, despite an initial market response to military tensions regarding Iran.
“The recent drop in gold below $4,000 correlates directly with the recent surge in oil prices linked to the attack on the Saudi East-West pipeline on September 10,” he mentioned in his blog, referencing attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure.
Outlook for Bitcoin Prices
As Bitcoin’s price action is examined on shorter time frames, analyst Rekt Capital cautioned that BTCUSD risks falling below key support levels around $76,000. The three-day chart reflects that the cryptocurrency attempted, but failed, to break through horizontal resistance at $78,500.
“Indeed, the three-day bearish retest was successful, and prices could very well dip below ~$76,000,” he noted in a message on X.
In its recent analysis, trading firm QCP Capital highlighted that the area between $76,000 and $76,600 has been a rebound zone four times since September. “BTC is currently situated between the support band of $76,000–$76,600 and resistance of $79,500–$80,500. A daily close above $79,500 would reclaim the level lost last Thursday,” they summarized. “A breach of support could lead to a test of the 50-week average near $75,700 and the 200-day near $73,100 below that.”
