BitMEX to Cease Operations
BitMEX, a pioneer in the cryptocurrency derivatives market, is set to close its doors following a strategic assessment conducted by its parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited.
The firm announced that operations will officially end on September 23, 2026. Clients are encouraged to close their open trades and withdraw funds prior to the shutdown.
BitMEX has assured its users that their assets will be safe and retrievable throughout the wind-down process.
BitMEX’s Impact on Crypto Derivatives Trading
The impending closure marks the conclusion of a significant era in the cryptocurrency sector. Established in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed, BitMEX quickly gained prominence as a leading platform for cryptocurrency derivatives trading. The exchange played a crucial role in advancing leveraged cryptocurrency trading.
In May 2016, BitMEX introduced its XBTUSD perpetual swap feature, enabling traders to bet on Bitcoin’s price with leverage while eliminating the concern of contract expiration. This product swiftly became one of the most popular trading instruments in the crypto space.
BitMEX also maintained an excellent security record, claiming that no client funds were lost due to hacking incidents throughout its 11 years of service.
Nonetheless, the company encountered numerous regulatory hurdles during its operations. In 2021, BitMEX agreed to a $100 million civil penalty to resolve allegations from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. In January 2025, HDR Global Trading faced an additional $100 million fine after pleading guilty to infractions related to the Bank Secrecy Act, specifically for lacking a sufficient anti-money-laundering program.
