Get ready to charge into action! The upcoming Minecraft update, “Mounts of Mayhem,” is set to introduce a thrilling new dimension to combat with the addition of spears. This exciting reveal came during the recent Minecraft Live presentation. For over a decade, players have relied on swords and axes for battling creatures, making the spear a significant and welcome addition to the game’s arsenal as the first new tiered weapon since its inception.

Since its debut in 2011, the immensely popular block-building world of Minecraft has continually evolved through numerous updates. These have brought a wealth of content, from the serene beauty of cherry blossom biomes to the vibrant charm of axolotls, and even the mysterious depths of Ancient Cities. Despite this constant evolution, the core tools and weapons remained largely unchanged. While the trident offered a throwable option, it wasn’t a craftable, tiered weapon. The last time a tiered tool was introduced was with the hoe, way back in the alpha version of the game in February 2010.

The “Mounts of Mayhem” update promises to revamp combat, potentially dethroning the sword as the go-to weapon. The spear’s arrival opens up new strategies for facing the game’s diverse enemies and adds fresh possibilities for player-versus-player encounters.

As a tiered weapon, spears will be craftable from various materials. Just like swords, axes, shovels, and pickaxes, the material used will determine its effectiveness. Craft a wooden spear, an iron spear, a diamond spear – the rarer the resource, the greater the durability and attack power. Crafting is simple: arrange two sticks diagonally, then add the desired material at the top to form the spearhead. Combine two sticks and a copper ingot, and voila – a copper spear!

Spears in Minecraft offer two distinct attack options: a slower, long-range jab and a devastating charge attack. For the charge, players must hold the spear and sprint towards their target. The faster the charge, the greater the damage inflicted. Imagine charging into battle on horseback, in a boat, or even soaring through the sky with Elytra wings – a truly epic way to defeat your foes!

However, mastering the spear’s jousting attack takes practice. While charging, players must lower the spear, a stance that can’t be maintained indefinitely due to the weapon’s weight. The heavier and more valuable the spear, the harder it is to wield, making a gold spear more challenging to handle than a wooden one.

Be warned! Players aren’t the only ones getting access to spears. Zombies will also be wielding them. To make matters worse, the “Mounts of Mayhem” update introduces zombie horse mounts, complete with a spear-wielding zombie rider!

Beyond spears and zombie horses, prepare to explore the depths with the new underwater Nautilus mount. Explore the ocean like never before, but be sure to prepare for underwater breathing using pufferfish. Keep an eye out for the zombie Nautilus, potentially ridden by a Drowned wielding a trident, proving to be just as dangerous as the mounted, spear-wielding zombies.

The “Mounts of Mayhem” update, bringing with it the new spear weapon, is scheduled to arrive later this year, following the Copper Age update which launched on September 30.
