The latest installment from Gearbox Software in the celebrated Borderlands series, Borderlands 4, is widely considered a triumph and a return to the franchise’s roots.

Our assessment declared, “Without a doubt, Borderlands 4 stands as my personal favorite within the entire Borderlands saga. It represents the pinnacle of everything the series has strived for, and then surpasses it.”

After what some perceived as a misstep with Borderlands 3, this release marks a significant leap forward. This sentiment is broadly echoed by critics. Currently, the game boasts a “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic, with a remarkable 97% of reviewers recommending it and an average score of 85. While its predecessor achieved an average score of 81, a crucial detail is that only 78% of critics gave it their recommendation.

Riding a wave of positive buzz, Borderlands 4 appears to be resonating with players, who are backing up critical acclaim with their wallets, indicating a truly enjoyable gaming experience.

Over 288,000 Gamers Sampled Borderlands 4 on Steam During the Weekend

According to data from SteamDB, Borderlands 4 reached a peak of over 288,000 simultaneous players on Steam this past Saturday, September 13th. Considering many are also playing on Xbox and PlayStation 5 consoles, the total player base is undoubtedly substantially larger.

However, the PC experience hasn’t been flawless for everyone. Some players have reported encountering performance-related issues. Fortunately, Gearbox has released some optimization tips and settings to potentially mitigate these problems.

A minor performance critique was also noted by our reviewer on PC, but it clearly didn’t detract significantly from their overall enjoyment.

Beyond its intrinsic appeal as a return to form, Borderlands 4 gained additional attention through a recent appearance on Conan O’Brien’s “Clueless Gamer” segment. As expected, Conan had some strong opinions regarding the ever-present Claptrap.

You know what’s great about this little Claptrap guy? It’ll never get annoying… He’s my least favorite trash can I’ve ever met, and that’s really saying something.

Whether beloved or begrudgingly tolerated, Claptrap, and the Borderlands 4 experience, is drawing players in droves. Nintendo Switch 2 gamers can anticipate joining the fun when the game launches on that platform on October 3rd.
