The cryptocurrency sector is moving towards significant regulatory changes, with US senators announcing a preliminary agreement with the White House on essential aspects of a legislation concerning stablecoins, as reported.

Senators Thom Tillis and Angela Alsobrooks indicated to Politico that modifications to the Clarity Act concerning digital tokens might be introduced to “prevent significant deposit withdrawals.”

Alsobrooks also stated her belief that this preliminary agreement would help not only to avert deposit withdrawals but also to “foster innovation” in the United States.

These remarks come as leaders within the cryptocurrency industry, banking officials, and regulators engage in discussions about the Clarity Act at the White House, with US President Donald Trump advocating for swift passage of the legislation.

Are Banks Holding the Clarity Act Hostage?

The proposed legislation, which seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for digital asset regulation, has been stalled over discussions around stablecoins and the interest they may yield for customers.

Participants in the crypto realm—including Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States—are keen to offer rewards to their customers on the tokens they hold.

However, banking representatives have expressed concerns that such practices could lead to a loss of their depositors as customers may turn to crypto exchanges for more appealing offers.

In January, Coinbase withdrew its endorsement of the legislation. This month, JPMorgan Chase’s CEO Jamie Dimon remarked that companies like Coinbase should be subjected to the same regulations as banks if they wish to offer stablecoin rewards.

Earlier this month, Trump expressed support for the crypto sector by urging the bill’s passage.

He stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, “Banks should not attempt to undermine The Genius Act or jeopardize The Clarity Act.”

“They need to strike favorable agreements with the Crypto Industry, as that would best serve the interests of the American public,” he further added.

Legislation Favorable to Cryptocurrency Expansion

The week saw clearer cryptocurrency regulations emerge after the US Securities and Exchange Commission released a pivotal interpretation of federal securities regulations.

Under the new guidelines from Wall Street’s primary regulator, cryptocurrencies have been classified into two distinct categories: tokenized securities and non-security crypto assets.

Assets such as XRP and Solana have been finally identified as commodities.

Crypto advocates have noted that the new regulations are likely to remain intact, as they informed DL News.

Since Trump assumed the presidency, several pro-cryptocurrency measures have been enacted, and the SEC has adopted a notably different stance in overseeing the industry.
