For several years, XRP (XRP +0.95%) has been a focal point for crypto enthusiasts, largely due to its promise of substantial wealth creation. Since its debut in 2013, XRP has experienced an astonishing rise of 23,000%.

Many investors believe that XRP has further upward potential. Currently trading at just over $1, some speculate it could eventually reach prices of $100 or even $1,000. Should that happen, XRP could become a pathway to millionaire status for its holders, given its capacity for extraordinary returns.

Is the Math Viable?

To assess the likelihood of XRP being a true millionaire-maker, we must analyze the numbers. To convert a modest $1,000 initial investment into $1 million, XRP would have to deliver returns of 1,000 times.

This projection, unfortunately, is quite unrealistic. At present, XRP has a market cap of around $80 billion. If it were to explode in value by 1,000 times, it would imply a market cap of $80 trillion—47 times greater than Bitcoin’s current valuation and 6.5 times the combined market cap of Apple, Nvidia, and SpaceX. In essence, $80 trillion is a staggering figure.

At one point, many believed that Ripple, the firm behind XRP, would discover enough practical applications for the token to validate such a high valuation. However, the ability of XRP to achieve those ambitious goals is now uncertain, particularly following the failure of comprehensive crypto legislation (the Clarity Act) in Washington, D.C.

Adding to the concerns, stablecoins are starting to fulfill some of XRP’s intended purposes, acting as bridge currencies. Ripple has acknowledged this shift and is advocating for the adoption of Ripple USD, a stablecoin launched in December 2024 that could serve as an alternative to XRP.

The Key Constraint on XRP’s Value

One significant factor that makes the prospect of 100x or 1,000x price increases for XRP extremely implausible is its total token supply of 100 billion. Based on a fully diluted valuation (FDV), XRP would quickly become a $1 trillion asset once it reaches a price of $10. For XRP to exceed that value, it would have to surpass Bitcoin in market capitalization, which seems highly unlikely in the near future.

For these reasons, I am removing XRP from my list of cryptocurrencies capable of generating millionaire-level returns. While it may still yield 10x gains, surpassing that threshold appears highly improbable. The most significant increases in XRP’s value have already occurred over the last decade, and it may be time to explore other investment opportunities.
