The virtual city creation landscape is incredibly crowded. Countless simulation games, each with their own unique take on infrastructure and management, compete for attention. To truly stand out, perhaps the genre needs to look to the urban development of the past and expand skyward. Introducing Stario: Haven Tower, a fresh management and strategy game from Stargate Games, a developer based in China. The core gameplay involves constructing your metropolis upwards through distinct environmental layers – from the arid Sand to the misty heights, through rain, frost, and beyond the clear skies until your city reaches among the Stars.
Success hinges on careful planning and, quite literally, elevation management, demanding a mastery of resource acquisition and efficient logistics. Players must route water systems across vertically separated city sections, set up aerial delivery systems utilizing balloons, and negotiate trade deals with peculiar flying turtle merchants who frequently visit the city. It is also essential to bolster structural integrity by either reinforcing the tower’s base or strategically using “lattice-like aerial platforms” to distribute mass.
Stario is launching in early access today. I recently obtained a game key from a particularly persistent flying turtle, who asked me to review the game. While a detailed analysis is premature, the game blends mystical elements with the demands of engineering. One potential drawback is the terminology employed. For instance, you can construct sacred beacons to improve the well-being of your residents, somewhat awkwardly named “Towertizens,” along with ritual sites to influence weather patterns.
Regardless, it offers an interesting aesthetic. The building designs boast an elaborate and colorful style, yet also demonstrate a certain level of restraint, evoking a spreadsheet-like look. A floating interface panel accompanies your towering creation, and it shifts when the camera angle changes, which can be visually distracting.
I intend to spend some time exploring Stario in the coming weeks. Given the sheer number of similar games available, I thought sharing this with you immediately was essential. Think of it as a discussion point within a saturated market rather than necessarily a must-buy right now. According to the creators, Stario: Haven Tower is expected to remain in early access for approximately 6 to 12 months. Further details are available on its Steam page.
