Prosecutors in China have initiated proceedings to confiscate over 61,800 Bitcoin tied to a substantial fraud investigation totaling more than 40 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $5.7 billion, as reported by The Paper.

The focal point of this case is Qian Zhimin, who is believed to have been the mastermind behind Tianjin Lantian Gree Electronic Technology. According to prosecutors, between 2014 and 2017, the firm marketed unauthorized wealth management products across the nation, luring investors with promises of guaranteed returns and principal protection. This fraudulent enterprise accumulated over 40.378 billion yuan from more than 102,000 investors, leading to nearly 20 billion yuan in losses.

Allegedly, the raised funds were misappropriated to pay off earlier investors, engage in fictitious investment schemes, purchase Bitcoin, and acquire assets such as real estate, vehicles, and luxury goods, rather than being used for legitimate business ventures.

In 2017, Qian fled China and later took refuge in the UK. British authorities subsequently confiscated his assets, which included the substantial stash of over 61,800 Bitcoin, along with other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin SV, Ripple, and Dogecoin, as well as cash, jewelry, and investment portfolios.
