AMD and OpenAI have forged a comprehensive, long-term agreement focused on providing significant computational resources across multiple generations of AMD products.
The arrangement, publicly accessible here, outlines the provision of substantial processing power, potentially reaching up to 6 gigawatts. AMD estimates this capacity as equivalent to the power consumption of roughly 4.5 million households.
The rollout of this processing power is planned in phases, with the initial deployment anticipated in the latter half of 2026. This timeline aligns with the expected arrival of AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 accelerators, the first chips slated to support OpenAI’s expanding infrastructure under this collaborative venture.

AMD asserts that the upcoming MI450 series is projected to surpass the performance benchmarks set by Nvidia’s Rubin CPX GPUs. The development of these enhancements is being informed by collaborative input from OpenAI.
Currently, AMD’s Instinct MI355X and MI300X chips are already deployed in support of select OpenAI workloads. They are recognized for their efficacy in managing large-scale AI model processing, largely attributed to their robust memory architecture and accelerated data throughput.
A key component of the agreement grants OpenAI the option to acquire up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, representing around 10% ownership. These shares will be vested in stages.
The initial tranche of shares will become available upon reaching the initial 1-gigawatt delivery milestone. Subsequent allocations will be unlocked as OpenAI scales its purchases up to the full 6-gigawatt capacity commitment. The final share allocation is contingent upon AMD’s stock achieving a price of $600 per share.
