The Civilization franchise often presents a view of unending societal advancement. But if you’re finding the latest installment, Civilization 7, a bit disappointing, why not revisit the critically acclaimed Civilization 6 from 2016? Great news: the Epic Games Store is currently offering Civilization 6 for free until July 24th!

Perhaps you’re already aware of Civilization 7’s shortcomings and are a long-time Civ 6 player. However, this free offering includes all of the game’s downloadable content (DLC) and expansions. Therefore, if you only own the base game from another retailer, this is an excellent opportunity to upgrade. And just to be clear, showing your displeasure towards Civilization 7 isn’t required when downloading Civilization 6. It’s just software; it won’t take it personally.

The Epic Games Store giveaway provides the Platinum Edition of Civilization 6. This edition features the Vikings Scenario Pack, the Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack, the Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack, the Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack, the Nubia Civilization & Scenario Pack, and the Khmer and Indonesia Civilization & Scenario Pack. Furthermore, it comes with the major expansions Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.

In light of the critical reaction to Civilization 7, it’s insightful to revisit Adam Smith’s (RPS in peace) Civilization 6 review from back in 2016. He stated, “Civ VI demands flexibility of thought and function, and it rewards it handsomely with a game that responds elegantly to all kinds of different playstyles,” concluding that “it is, quite simply, a thing of wonder, and a late contender for my personal game of the year.”

Later, Rock Paper Shotgun recognized it as the best 4X game of 2016 in their year-end Advent Calendar. It still holds a strong position at number 6 on their list of the best PC strategy games. (Although, the community ranked it at 13th on their list because RPS readers like to disagree…)

A return to the older title is enticing. Hopefully, with future updates and improvements, Civilization 7 will reach a similar level of quality. The Civilization series, after all, is a game of patience and the long term. The upcoming update will include auto-exploration for scouts and refined Age transitions. If the Age mechanic can be resolved, the rest of the game might come together.
