Short-term rental platforms like Airbnb often present unexpected situations, especially when properties are used for purposes beyond typical vacations or tourist visits.
During the summer of 2024, a homeowner in the US experienced just such a surprise. She discovered her rental property was being used for an unusual purpose: cryptocurrency mining. The homeowner, Ashley, shared her story on TikTok, revealing that she suspected something amiss when a shockingly high electricity bill of over $1,500 arrived.

Although no interior security cameras were present, exterior cameras captured the tenants removing ten computers from the property upon their departure. It was then the excessive electrical usage came to light. The owner faced a staggering electricity bill exceeding $1,500, a direct result of their activities.
As a point of comparison, operating ten high-end gaming computers consuming 600 watts each for ten hours daily over three weeks in the United States would typically amount to approximately $250 in electricity costs, given the lower rates compared to Europe. A similar usage pattern in Germany, for instance, could cost around €500. Mining rigs, however, draw significantly more power, which explains the exorbitant bill Ashley received.
Adding to the energy consumption, Ashley noted that the renters utilized her electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The homeowner initially disputed the inflated bill, but after filing a formal complaint with Airbnb and pursuing the matter with the tenants, they were ultimately responsible for covering the excessive electricity charges. Moving forward, the property listing now explicitly prohibits cryptocurrency mining and the use of the EV charger.
