The Security Alliance (SEAL), a dedicated cybersecurity advocacy organization, has introduced a new resource designed to aid investigators in tackling cryptocurrency-related phishing schemes.

This innovative tool empowers experienced professionals and researchers to validate whether a potentially deceptive website is actively distributing malicious material.

A key challenge in phishing investigations is the common use of techniques by attackers to obscure genuine content from security measures. These fraudulent activities have resulted in losses exceeding $400 million in the first half of the current year alone.

In response, SEAL has created TLS Attestations and Verifiable Phishing Reports, a system that provides investigators with a means of obtaining credible, tamper-evident confirmation of the content displayed by a website.

The solution involves a trusted server, known as an attestation server, integrated into the secured communication channel between the user and the potentially fraudulent website. This server takes on encryption processing, maintaining a direct connection between the user and the website.

Researchers can utilize this by configuring a tool on their system to monitor web traffic, sending connection specifics to the attestation server.

This generates “Verifiable Phishing Reports,” as termed by SEAL. These digitally authenticated records, achieved through cryptographic signatures, serve as proof of the content presented by a site to a user.

This allows SEAL to reliably determine if a site is harmful without needing direct interaction, reducing risk and bypassing deceptive methods employed by scammers to hide malicious content.

Recently, SEAL discovered a group masquerading as IT specialists who illegally gained access to cryptocurrency organizations. Want to know more? Read the full story.
