WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, federal authorities unveiled charges against six individuals accused of running a scheme that exploited images of attractive women to defraud unsuspecting Americans. Officials described this operation as “a highly sophisticated and increasingly prevalent type of cryptocurrency fraud.”
Key Details:
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed charges against six men, identified as scammers based in Africa with connections to Southeast Asia and China.
Authorities claim that these scammers impersonated attractive women on dating sites to engage with victims. Over time, they led these individuals to link their cryptocurrency wallets to fake websites linked to NFT investments. Subsequently, the scammers siphoned funds from these wallets without the victims noticing.
The scamsters reportedly organized their U.S. victims’ personal information, storing details in contact cards on their devices. One example of such a contact entry read: “Bob/Software Engineer/50/Phoenix/divorced.”
Moreover, they provided human models—real individuals adopting false identities—with comprehensive instructions to produce brief videos and audio messages aimed at ensnaring their targets.
FBI investigators have traced around 74 cryptocurrency wallets linked to nearly 800 victims scattered across the nation.
Reactions:
“The financial and emotional toll on victims is significant, as they not only face monetary losses but also feelings of shame. Many might hesitate to report such incidents, leading to a loss of their sense of security and control over their lives,” stated Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
She emphasized, “This issue extends beyond the borders of the United States; it represents a global crisis.”
Next Steps:
This fraudulent operation is reported to have originated in Madagascar. Pirro mentioned that U.S. officials have requested extradition of the six accused from local authorities.
