While a complete overhaul of Dead Space 2, similar to EA’s impressive remake of the first game, may not be essential for everyone, fans yearning for another terrifying trip to its sprawling, space-bound city of horrors should definitely explore the community-created Marker Patch.

This comprehensive patch, spearheaded by Wemino (known for enhancing games like the bullet-time focused F.E.A.R. and American McGee’s Alice), acts as a single solution for various issues affecting the PC version of the game. This includes problems arising from running the game at higher frame rates on powerful, multi-core processors. Wemino has also increased the maximum number of Necromorph corpses that can be displayed, enabled anisotropic filtering system-wide, and provided options to block the game’s automatic connections to defunct EA online services.

The Marker Patch is available on Github. It works with both the Steam and EA app versions of the game, and includes instructions for installation on Steam Deck and Linux. Here’s a condensed overview of the patch’s features, compiled directly from the Github page:

  • Stabilizes in-game physics at high frame rates, preventing erratic behavior such as flying bodies.
  • Prevents game crashes on PCs with more than 10 CPU cores.
  • Corrects VSync implementation, ensuring it uses the refresh rate selected in the game settings instead of being locked at 30 FPS.
  • Fixes issues preventing the correct unlocking of rewards for completing Zealot and Hardcore difficulty modes.
  • Resolves conflicts in the item database where some DLC suits share incorrect IDs with other suits.
  • Prevents rare crashes that can occur when the game lists save files.
  • Scales subtitle text appropriately for high-resolution displays.
  • Implements raw mouse input, resolving sensitivity problems.
  • Blocks all DirectInput devices except the mouse and keyboard, preventing unwanted camera movement from devices such as racing wheels or flight sticks.
  • Forces anisotropic texture filtering on all textures to enhance clarity at sharp angles.
  • Forces proper trilinear filtering for smoother texture transitions between mipmap levels.
  • Blocks connection attempts to EA servers at startup and prevents error messages from appearing.
  • Increases the maximum number of bodies that can remain visible in the environment.
  • Automatically sets the game to your screen resolution on the first launch, instead of defaulting to 1024×768.
  • Skips the EA/Visceral Games intro video on launch (when enabled).
  • Allows control over which DLC items are available in the store.

The patch also integrates with dinputto8 for improved mod compatibility. While the specifics of “dinputto8” might seem technical, the integration ultimately enhances the game’s ability to work with mods. According to Wemino, “The patch uses settings that work well for most people by default, but lets you change every part.”

A full-scale Dead Space 2 remake currently appears unlikely. Rumors surfaced in April 2024 suggesting that EA had shelved such a project due to the original remake’s sales figures. However, EA has denied these claims, and news regarding the Dead Space franchise has been scarce since then.

In our Dead Space remake review from January 2023, Liam Richardson (formerly of RPS) described it as “luxuriously improved with small, thoughtful adjustments.” While I appreciated EA Motive’s revamped take on Visceral’s original setting, I felt that many additions were unnecessary. I also personally found Isaac Clarke to be a more compelling character when he remained silent.
