In a statement made on September 4th, 2025, Piero Cipollone, a key member of the European Central Bank’s Executive Board, presented a case to the European Parliament in favor of launching a digital euro. Cipollone argued that this initiative would significantly bolster the resilience of Europe’s payment infrastructure while also enhancing its strategic independence.
During his address in Brussels, Cipollone emphasized the digital euro’s potential to diminish the euro zone’s dependence on payment services from outside Europe. He pointed out that these non-European providers currently handle a substantial 66% of all card transactions within the euro area, often accompanied by significant transaction costs.
