The Ethereum Foundation is ramping up its efforts to broaden its blockchain’s functionalities, announcing a dedicated team to concentrate on decentralized artificial intelligence (dAI).

This new initiative is designed to establish Ethereum as both a primary financial settlement platform and a reliable, secure base for sophisticated intelligent systems and digital interactions.

AI Focus

Davide Crapis, heading the dAI team, announced in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on September 15th, that their objective is to ensure Ethereum becomes the central hub where autonomous agents can engage in transactions, collaborate, and cultivate reputations independently, free from centralized platform control.

He explained:

“The convergence of Ethereum and AI seeks to empower individuals while unlocking AI’s full potential. By providing neutral, verifiable, and censorship-resistant infrastructure, AI can truly serve the interests of everyone.”

To achieve this, the dAI team will prioritize two key areas: fostering an AI economy built upon Ethereum and promoting a decentralized AI technology framework.

The first focus involves enabling automated systems and AI-driven agents to directly manage payments and adhere to governance protocols on the Ethereum network. The second aims to ensure AI systems are developed on infrastructure that is open, verifiable, and resistant to censorship, contrasting with closed, proprietary systems.

Crapis emphasized the mutually beneficial relationship between Ethereum and AI, highlighting that blockchain technology enhances AI’s trustworthiness, and in turn, AI can significantly boost Ethereum’s utility.

He further noted that as intelligent agents become more prevalent and sophisticated, the need for a dependable blockchain layer to secure value and establish reputation becomes critical. Consequently, Ethereum stands to benefit by serving as this foundational layer, allowing AI systems to operate independently of large, centralized technology companies.

The Ethereum Foundation is already advancing this vision through its work on ERC-8004, a proposed standard designed to enable AI agents to demonstrate their reliability and execute secure transactions.

To realize its goals, the dAI team plans to collaborate with a range of ecosystem projects and academic researchers operating at the intersection of blockchain and AI technologies.

According to him:

“We will be working closely with both the Protocol and Ecosystem teams at the EF, aligning protocol improvements with the requirements of AI developers and funding innovative public resources to position Ethereum as the premier platform for AI development.”
