For many devoted followers of the legendary Superman saga, Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the iconic hero remains the gold standard. Reeve cemented his place in movie history with his appearances across four films. Now, Amazon is offering a brand-new, exclusive way to experience those adventures: the Superman 5-Film Steelbook Library Collection, slated for release on September 2. Initial pre-orders for this $130 collector’s edition sold out rapidly after going live on July 22nd, but good news for fans – it’s back in stock as of August 10th!
Regrettably, the same fortune hasn’t smiled upon The Dark Knight Trilogy Steelbook Library Collection. This highly sought-after Amazon exclusive, unveiled shortly after the Superman set, vanished even faster. Despite a couple of brief reappearances, it sadly remains unavailable as of August 10th.
$130 | Releases September 2 | Amazon Exclusive
This appears to be a slightly revised edition of the previous steelbook release of the 85th Anniversary Superman 5-Film Collection. While the original included physical extras, this version focuses on the films themselves and the steelbook cases, likely contributing to a lower price point.
Inside, you’ll find each movie in stunning 4K resolution, along with standard Blu-ray and Movies Anywhere digital copies. These are housed in individual steelbook cases, all contained within a collector’s tin. Here’s a rundown of the included films:
- Superman (1978)
- Superman II
- Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
- Superman III
- Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
This marks another addition to Amazon’s growing lineup of exclusive steelbook collections with library cases. It’s becoming quite the trend! Just recently, Amazon launched the 007: Sean Connery 6-Film Steelbook Collection in June. And earlier this month, they unveiled the A Nightmare on Elm Street 7-Film Steelbook Collection.
A special note: this collection features *two* versions of Superman II. This stems from a long-standing situation involving creative conflicts and budgetary concerns, leading to Richard Donner’s removal as director and replacement by Richard Lester. Donner’s vision, released decades later, is generally considered the superior version, adding greater depth and substance to the narrative.
Alongside the five films in native 4K resolution with HDR10 and immersive audio formats – Dolby Atmos, TrueHD 7.1, and Master Audio 2.0 – this 10-disc set is packed with a wealth of bonus material. These features are located on the 1080p Blu-ray discs for each film and include documentaries, audio commentaries, TV specials, and much more. See the full list of bonus features at the end of this article.
The Superman 5-Film Collection is also available in a standard edition for $75. While you’ll forgo the steelbook cases and collector’s tin, it still offers the same films in both 4K and 1080p, along with all the special features.
Securing individual 4K Blu-ray copies of these Superman movies can sometimes be a challenge. Currently, Superman ’78 is the only one in stock on Amazon, and it’s available at a discounted price of just $15 (originally $34!).
Consider pairing this with the new Superman movie that’s available for preorder. Not only is it an entertaining film that honors the character’s legacy, but the steelbook edition perfectly complements the Reeve collections. While the Steelbook Edition is currently sold out, keep an eye out for its potential return before release!
