It seems recent gaming commercials are all sharing a similar, attention-grabbing vibe.
Following in the footsteps of Sega’s nostalgic approach, referencing the “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” era in their marketing campaign for Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, the latest live-action trailer for Battlefield 6 takes a similar playful jab.
Over the past few years, promotional efforts for the Call of Duty series have primarily focused on celebrity endorsements and the wider cultural phenomenon associated with the game, rather than showcasing the gameplay itself. The sheer number of famous faces that have been featured in Call of Duty‘s marketing and even within the game itself, is quite remarkable. For instance, Kobe Bryant and Jimmy Kimmel famously starred in the iconic Call of Duty: Black Ops commercial.
Some might argue that the franchise jumped the shark with the inclusion of actors like John Malkovich, Ray Liotta, Ron Perlman, and others as characters within the actual games.
Given the excitement surrounding Battlefield 6, it feels appropriate that the game’s marketing playfully acknowledges its biggest competitor.
Battlefield 6’s Live Action Trailer Lightheartedly Mocks Call of Duty’s Celebrity Obsession
The new Battlefield 6 trailer immediately feels like a knowing wink to the audience.
Featuring Zac Efron, Jimmy Butler, Morgan Waller, and Paddy Pimblett embodying the various Battlefield 6 character classes. As The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” plays, Efron is interrupted mid-speech when the squad is caught in an explosion. Afterwards, someone asks, “Who was that?”
This isn’t the first instance of the Battlefield franchise playfully mocking another game’s marketing.
Following the notable success of the “Mad World” trailer for Gears of War, 2008’s Battlefield: Bad Company offered its own tongue-in-cheek take. Consequently, this gentle ribbing is perfectly aligned with the Battlefield brand’s established style.
Ultimately, everything seems to be in good spirit. It’s refreshing to see genuine excitement surrounding a Battlefield release. Hopefully, the game lives up to the hype.
Battlefield 6 is scheduled to launch on October 10th for PC, Xbox consoles, and PS5.
