Renowned director Michel Franco recently shared his perspective on the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) during the Sarajevo Film Festival. The occasion marked his acceptance of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award and the screening of his latest cinematic work, Dreams.

According to a report published by Deadline on August 20, Franco stated that the integration of AI into society is an inevitable process. While he doesn’t express specific anxieties about the technology, he acknowledged his personal lack of experience with it, mentioning that he has not engaged with tools like ChatGPT.

Franco suggests that AI could offer practical benefits in filmmaking. He believes that its application for tasks such as digitally refining an actor’s appearance or streamlining sound editing could provide filmmakers with more time for creative writing and reduce production costs. He indicated that he would consider using AI for these types of targeted enhancements.

Despite the potential benefits of AI in streamlining the filmmaking process, Franco expressed concerns regarding its impact on artistic integrity. He noted the challenge in distinguishing between music created by humans and that produced by machines, even for experienced musicians. This raises questions about the future of originality and employment within the creative industries.

Franco also announced that he’s currently engaged in producing his first-ever documentary. Part of the film was shot in Poland earlier in the year, but the final focus and scope of the project are yet to be determined.

The documentary will delve into the historical events of the Second World War, specifically exploring the themes of concentration and extermination camps. Franco mentioned that the documentary’s conception stemmed from longstanding discussions with actor Tim Roth on the subject of fascism.

Amidst the industry’s widespread focus on AI, Franco emphasized that his primary concerns lie in the realm of politics. He asserted:

My worries are far greater regarding fascism than AI, because we possess the ability to actively resist and manage it.
