Galaxy Digital (GLXY) has announced the launch of a $5 million fund aimed at assisting Bitcoin developers who are working to secure the network against potential threats from quantum computing.

The cryptocurrency financial services firm stated that it will start accepting proposals for the Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative right away. The grants will emphasize the development of quantum-resistant signature methods, tools for wallet migration, and comprehensive security audits. Furthermore, the company expresses hope that other organizations will contribute both funding and research to expedite the shift toward quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions.

Currently, Bitcoin protects wallets and transactions using cryptographic methods that present no significant challenges for existing computers. While quantum computing remains in its early stages and is not yet capable of threatening the blockchain, progress in this technology has spurred various sectors, including government and industry, to pursue quantum-resistant standards ahead of any imminent threats.

Should quantum computers eventually acquire the ability to breach Bitcoin’s cryptographic defenses, research from CryptoQuant suggests that approximately 6.9 million bitcoin (BTC) could be at risk for theft. With the current price hovering around $66,800, this amounts to an estimated $461 billion.
