Following the public identification of a suspect in the Charlie Kirk killing, online users quickly started searching for his online presence. One account discovered was believed to be his Steam profile, which, according to reports, is now under investigation by the Secret Service.
Tyler Robinson, age 22, who faces charges for the murder of Kirk at a public event last week, is said to have used Donald Trump’s name as an alias within the Valve-operated gaming platform. Sources familiar with the situation suggest this connection to the former president prompted the Secret Service’s involvement, even though the agency wasn’t responsible for protecting Kirk at the time of the incident.
The Steam account, widely attributed to Robinson, reportedly shows thousands of hours of gameplay in titles such as Sea of Thieves, Deep Rock Galactic, and Counter-Strike. Public Steam reviews seemingly written by him appear typical of those found for these games. Additionally, people are examining his apparent Steam inventory, which includes virtual items like hats, trading cards, and other unlockables.
Steam is among several gaming-related online platforms scheduled to appear before Congress next month to address concerns about online radicalization. The heads of Twitch, Discord, and Reddit have also been requested to testify. Despite the appearance of a reference to Helldivers 2 near the scene of the crime, little public evidence has emerged indicating that gaming, internet memes, or other aspects of online culture significantly influenced Robinson’s alleged assassination of the political commentator.
“The politically driven murder of Charlie Kirk took the life of a devoted husband, father, and dedicated American. In the face of this tragedy, along with other occurrences of politically motivated violence, Congress is obligated to investigate online platforms that radicals may have used to promote political violence,” House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) stated in a press release on Wednesday.
However, leaked Discord communications and interviews with individuals familiar with Robinson suggest his engagement with gaming and the internet wasn’t particularly unusual or cause for concern, appearing similar to that of others his age.
