The upcoming roguelike racing game, Reality Drift, features a remarkably considerate aquatic companion, as highlighted in its trailer. This fish thoughtfully asks, “You OK babe? You’ve barely touched your boost?” – a question that might just redefine supportive video game prompts. The promise of meaningful choices within a racing game initially drew attention, but the helpful fish, coupled with bizarre roadside directions leading to ‘space,’ ‘cat land,’ and even ‘hell,’ elevates the experience. A visual showcase of these quirky elements, dynamically animated, is available.
According to its Steam page, the game involves “racing through a series of strange worlds, choosing upgrades for your car and deciding which track will be next – your decisions are just as important as how you drive!” Tracks influence vehicle stats such as grip, acceleration, and boost capabilities. While the precise nature of the competition remains ambiguous, it might explore the theme of surpassing one’s own previous achievements, a concept challenged by the presence of goblins in other games. Beyond core stats, intriguing upgrades like “regen braking, shield, antigrav,” and the enigmatic “foresight” await discovery.
“Some missions include roguelike deckbuilding, where you have a deck of cards which have effects while drawn. In addition to upgrading your car using the core stats, you’ll also choose new cards to add to your deck”.
Hopefully, the game avoids replicating the overused Slay The Spire-style node map. Otherwise, all is good. This title is slated for release in the “Q4” of the current year.
