The cameras are expected to start rolling on The Batman 2 next spring, but the identity of the villain challenging Gotham’s protector remains a mystery. Director Matt Reeves offered some intriguing clues during a conversation with Josh Horowitz of MTV on the Emmy Awards red carpet. Notably, Cristin Milioti secured an award for her leading role in the limited series, The Batman spin-off, The Penguin.

Reeves revealed that he and his writing partner, Mattson Tomlin, undertook extensive research within the Batman comic archives and analyzed various films, including those set outside of Gotham, to refine their storyline. Given that his first film emphasized Batman’s emergence as a hero, Reeves aims to shift the focus of the sequel towards Bruce Wayne himself. The antagonist in The Batman 2 will delve into Wayne’s history and personal life, posing a threat beyond merely challenging the Dark Knight.

“The selection of a compelling antagonist that truly explores… Bruce Wayne’s origins and experiences guided our deliberations. While I can’t reveal the final choice, I’m extremely enthusiastic about it,” Reeves explained.

The director further narrowed down the possibilities, stating, “I will say that this particular character hasn’t truly been explored in a movie before.”

This statement seemingly excludes the Joker, who made a cameo appearance in The Batman portrayed by Barry Keoghan, as well as Colin Farrell’s Penguin. It also eliminates other prominent adversaries like Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Bane, Mr. Freeze, the Scarecrow, Two-Face, Ra’s al Ghul, and Talia al Ghul, highlighting the extensive history of Batman villains in cinema. The shapeshifting Clayface appears improbable too, due to a standalone project centered on the character in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo/DC Comics

While The Batman connected the Riddler’s backstory to the Wayne lineage, providing numerous potential avenues for villains to exert pressure on Bruce Wayne, some options appear particularly apt. The criminal genius Hugo Strange is known for using his psychological prowess to deduce Batman’s secret identity. Another compelling choice would be the Court of Owls, a clandestine organization comprising members of Gotham’s wealthiest and most powerful families, deeply entwined with the Wayne family’s history.

The Court of Owls debuted in a 2012 comic book of the same title, penned by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Greg Capullo, suggesting that casual or long-time Batman devotees may be less familiar with them. There isn’t an animated series episode focusing on this cabal. Nevertheless, Reeves’ in-depth exploration of Batman mythology suggests the Court of Owls could be an ideal fit, resonating with modern comic book enthusiasts.

Regardless of Reeves’ ultimate decision, emphasizing Bruce Wayne’s character in the sequel should allow Robert Pattinson to showcase a wider range of acting skills, maintaining the film’s focus on mystery and intrigue. We’ll have to continue speculating until The Batman 2 hits theaters on Oct. 1, 2027. Stay tuned for Batman movie updates and release date information.
