According to recent regulatory disclosures, prominent universities such as Harvard and Brown have gained exposure to Bitcoin.
The Harvard Management Company, which manages the university’s endowment, holds a $116 million stake in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, as indicated by a 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Brown University, not wanting to be outdone, has increased its investment in BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, now possessing shares valued at $13 million, based on similar documentation. Brown initially invested in Bitcoin in May.
Neither Brown University nor Harvard University have provided immediate comments following inquiries.
These recent filings demonstrate the increasing trend of established institutions seeking investment opportunities in the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
Crypto ETFs, such as BlackRock’s Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), offer investors a straightforward way to invest in Bitcoin without the complexities of direct ownership and digital storage.
BlackRock’s IBIT stands out as the most successful crypto ETF, attracting the highest amount of capital inflows and currently managing $86.3 billion in assets.
Since the regulatory green light for Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, numerous major institutions have invested in Bitcoin, which was once considered a niche asset.
The introduction of these ETFs has triggered a substantial influx of capital into the cryptocurrency market, enabling investors who were previously hesitant due to concerns about managing digital wallets to easily participate.
Over the past year, pension funds and various U.S. states have allocated funds to Bitcoin through these ETFs, alongside traditional investments in sectors such as technology and other U.S. equities.
