Early in 2024, entertainment giant Disney made a significant investment, pouring over a billion dollars into Epic Games, the company behind the popular game Fortnite. This investment signaled the development of an immersive, Disney-themed metaverse experience. Since the announcement, the partnership has already yielded some visible results, including the introduction of character skins like the Incredibles and Disney Villains in Fortnite, as well as entirely new seasons inspired by Marvel and Star Wars. It’s clear: Disney’s presence in the Fortnite universe has significantly increased.
However, the highly anticipated Disney and Fortnite metaverse mode remains largely a mystery. Its release date is still unknown, and information about it is scarce. Let’s delve into what limited details we have about this project.
Unpacking the Disney and Fortnite Mode: What Is It?
The honest answer? We’re not entirely sure. Official visuals, like teasers or trailers, are nonexistent, and concrete details are hard to come by. However, let’s revisit Disney’s own description from the initial announcement:
“Beyond being a world-class gaming experience that connects with Fortnite, this new, ongoing universe will open up numerous opportunities for consumers to enjoy, observe, purchase, and interact with content, figures, and narratives from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and beyond. Players, gamers, and enthusiasts will be empowered to craft their unique stories and adventures, express their enthusiasm in a distinctly Disney manner, and exchange content with one another in enjoyable ways.”
While much of this description is conceptual and lacks specifics, a crucial point stands out: the Disney experience within Epic’s ecosystem is intended to be a distinct entity that “connects” with Fortnite, rather than simply being a Fortnite game mode. This distinction is important because the Disney and Fortnite project will operate as its own curated environment. Not all Fortnite character outfits will be compatible, and conversely, some character skins available in the Disney mode may not be usable in other parts of Fortnite.
As Epic executive Saxs Persson explained to The Verge in October 2024, “Not every outfit will be able to do everything. A [Lego] minifig doesn’t hold a gun. Brands should be able to enforce the brand guidelines to the degree that they’re comfortable with that brand being associated with particular ratings.”
Furthermore, in March 2025, a Disney Imagineer hinted at a potential integration with physical Disney theme parks. Speaking at South by Southwest, the Imagineer suggested that the Fortnite-Disney collaboration may extend beyond the digital realm.
Asa Kalama, Head of Interactive Experiences at Disney, posed the question: “Imagine… what if you could visit Smuggler’s Run at the park, embark on an incredible mission, and then have your actions influence your gameplay back home?”
So, What Will the Gameplay Be Like?
Despite the few clues shared, the core gameplay experience remains largely undefined. We’ve seen glimpses of potential features, such as the ability to stream Disney content within the game and purchase merchandise. Rumors also suggest that parts of the experience may be set in a virtual recreation of Disneyland, potentially offering players the chance to “ride” iconic Disney attractions digitally. Leaks have also pointed toward cinematic cutscenes and a compelling storyline, hinting at a campaign mode.
However, even with these scattered pieces of information, the overall nature of the Disney and Fortnite integration remains elusive. While we have hints, they don’t yet form a complete picture of the core gameplay.
Release Date: When Can We Expect It?
Given the lack of concrete details, it’s unlikely that the Disney and Fortnite project will launch this year. A recent report from the Wall Street Journal indicated that the project’s progress may be slower than anticipated, citing Disney’s extensive approval processes. However, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has refuted these claims, stating that Disney has been more responsive than initially expected.
Regardless of the accuracy of these reports, the limited information available suggests that the Disney and Fortnite initiative is still in early stages of development. A release in 2026, at the earliest, seems a reasonable expectation, unless Epic Games has drastically improved its ability to keep its secrets under wraps.
