A proposal to utilize surplus energy from France’s nuclear facilities for Bitcoin mining is garnering support from the Rassemblement National (RN) party.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the RN, publicly endorsed the initiative during a visit to the Flamanville nuclear power station on March 11.
This marks a shift from her 2016 stance, where she cautioned that digital currencies could concentrate financial power within global institutions, diminishing citizens’ control.

Aurélien Lopez-Liguori, a member of parliament from RN, has formally presented the proposal. The plan entails deploying
Bitcoin mining infrastructure at facilities operated by Électricité de France (EDF), the national power company.
Lopez-Liguori emphasized the importance of utilizing excess electricity instead of letting it go to waste, suggesting that converting surplus energy into Bitcoin could yield tangible advantages.
France’s nuclear energy sector frequently produces more electricity than is immediately needed. The RN party views
Bitcoin mining as a viable method for absorbing this unused power.
However, Jean-Philippe Tanguy, the RN’s financial spokesperson, voiced reservations, stating that the party should prioritize
supporting centralized financial systems and expressing concerns that promoting decentralized digital currencies like Bitcoin might conflict with the RN’s core principles.
Separately, residents in Granbury, Texas, have reported persistent noise issues stemming from a nearby Bitcoin mining operation owned by MARA Holdings. Want to know more?
