The new device integrates Transaction Check, a feature previously implemented in Ledger’s
Flex and
Stax models. Transaction Check scrutinizes transactions and smart contracts before you approve them. If there’s a potential risk, the device will display a warning.

The Nano Gen5 also offers direct connectivity to decentralized applications (dApps). This means users can interact with Web3 platforms without the need for separate wallets or browser-based extensions.

For added customization, the device offers a new badge feature, including options like a hammer, a crowned frog, and a duck. The custom badge collection showcases artwork by Susan Kare, the artist behind the original Apple Macintosh icons.

Ledger also announced a collaboration with Noah, a fintech platform bridging traditional banking and blockchain tech. This collaboration enables users to receive salaries or other standard currency payments directly on their Gen5 device.

During the announcement, the company also revealed a shift in terminology. Ledger will move away from the term “hardware wallet,” instead using “signer.”

The company clarified that “hardware wallet” no longer accurately reflects the full scope of what their devices do. While secure crypto storage remains crucial, users also utilize them daily for transaction signing, secure logins, and interactions with apps and smart contracts. The term “signer” better encapsulates that active function.
