“The Mask,” initially released in 1994, became a cornerstone in Jim Carrey’s rise to Hollywood stardom, standing alongside his other two blockbuster hits from that year. The role of the unassuming Stanley Ipkiss and his wildly unpredictable alter-ego seemed tailor-made for Carrey’s unique comedic talent and expressive physicality. Under the direction of Chuck Russell, “The Mask” proved to be a resounding success for New Line Cinema, amassing an impressive $351 million at the box office.
The film’s widespread popularity spawned an animated series. Later came a sequel, though the less said about that, the better!
This new 4K version of “The Mask” features a meticulous restoration, derived from the original camera negative, and personally approved by director Chuck Russell. The 4K presentation boasts High Dynamic Range with both Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, coupled with lossless stereo, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound, and a completely reimagined Dolby Atmos mix.
Staying true to Arrow Video’s signature style, this Limited Edition includes a reversible sleeve featuring two distinct artwork options: the original theatrical poster showcasing Carrey’s signature grin, and a minimalist yet impactful image of the Mask gearing up for some serious fun. Inside, you’ll also find an illustrated booklet with insights from author Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and original production notes, a double-sided poster presenting two original artwork styles, and a set of six postcard-sized art prints.

Love the Movie? Check Out “The Mask” Comic Books!

The movie “The Mask” was based on the comic book miniseries published by Dark Horse Comics. However, while the film has a light and fun tone, mimicking a live-action cartoon, the comics are darker and filled with explicit and brutal violence. Stanley Ipkiss in the comics is unlike the film’s Jim Carrey portrayal of a lovable loser, and when he gets the mask, he becomes brutal, exacting revenge on those who have wronged him.
Although some of the scenes made it into the film, they were diluted. In the movie, Ipkiss’ alter-ego only humiliates the mechanics who extort him, but in the comics, they are killed gruesomely. Other characters are murdered in cold blood, and Ipkiss doesn’t have a happy ending. If you are curious about the original absurdly violent comics, you can get the “Mask Omnibus Edition” for $23.62 (down from $30). Following the film’s success, further comic books were created. However, none of them surpass the original miniseries by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke, a dark tale of revenge and corruption from absolute power.
