BioWare faced significant setbacks the previous year when Dragon Age: The Veilguard experienced a problematic launch and ultimately underperformed relative to EA’s sales projections. In response, EA reduced BioWare’s workforce, leaving a leaner team dedicated to developing the next installment in the Mass Effect saga. However, according to Mark Darrah, a former BioWare employee, this situation might have a positive side.

Darrah, who was an executive producer for the initial three Dragon Age games before his departure, recently appeared on MrMattyPlays’ YouTube channel. He suggested that the remaining BioWare developers should strategically leverage the perceived failures of The Veilguard to secure necessary resources from EA.

“Frankly, the Mass Effect team can use The Veilguard as a case study, highlighting areas to avoid based on its performance,” Darrah stated. “I would strongly advise the team to use Veilguard as a scapegoat, regardless of its complete accuracy, to obtain the support they require from the organization.”

During the same discussion, Darrah mentioned that BioWare had previously explored the possibility of remastering the Dragon Age trilogy, but EA’s response was not encouraging. The Veilguard’s development was marked by challenges, including an initial concept centered around a live-service model before its eventual shift to a single-player experience. Furthermore, past BioWare staff have indicated a lack of cohesive collaboration between the Dragon Age and Mass Effect teams.

Mike Gamble, the producer for Mass Effect, recently hinted that the upcoming game will continue to feature the series’ recognizable lens flare effect. In related news, the Mass Effect TV series being produced by Prime Video has appointed Doug Jung as its showrunner.
