Netflix has officially confirmed the use of generative AI for creating specific visual effects in an original series. This information comes from a report released on July 18 by the BBC.
The scene is featured in The Eternaut, a science fiction program produced in Argentina.
According to co-CEO Ted Sarandos, incorporating AI helped the production team complete the sequence more rapidly and at a reduced expense compared to conventional special effects methods.

Sarandos indicated that this method allowed a production with limited funding to generate visual effects that might otherwise have been unattainable. By accelerating the process nearly tenfold, the crew managed to complete the sequence within their allocated budget.
He mentioned that this marked the initial instance of Netflix incorporating AI-generated visuals into a finalized show or movie. The creative team expressed satisfaction with the result.
Sarandos further pointed out that technologies like generative AI have the potential to democratize access to visual effects for productions operating on tighter budgets.
Netflix clarified that AI served as a tool to support the team, not to replace human roles. Designers retained control over the creative direction and gave final approval to all visual elements.
This announcement coincided with the release of the company’s latest financial results, reporting revenues of $11 billion in the second quarter. Profits also saw an increase from $2.1 billion to $3.1 billion.
